I can’t say that the world of mermaids ever appealed to me. As a kid, I was into superheroes like Wolverine and Batman, not singing fish. So when The Little Mermaid first made a splash, I didn’t feel the need to watch it; that is, until all of my classmates started talking about it, day after day, hour after hour. Suddenly, I too had to see the movie. And wouldn’t you believe it, the thing was scheduled to play Saturday on TV. I was set. I didn’t have to go to a theater. I didn’t have to pay to watch it. I could see the movie and then understand what all my classmates were talking about.
It was a B movie. It was boring. It wasn’t the cartoon. I never did see that movie until I was much older and could stomach singing fish. But by then no one was really talking about it. I had missed the boat. Not so with Biblical themes and the words of our Lord and Savior, Jesus. What He has to say will always be relevant no matter the popular disposition of society at large. This year, we’re going to explore the theme of Servant Leadership. It’s an election year. Everyone has ideas on what makes good leadership. Jesus did too and tells us so throughout the Gospels. One strong example of this is found in Matthew 20:25b-28 (NLT):
You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.
This new district blog will give you the opportunity to submit your ideas and stories about servant leadership. We want to hear from you. For not only do you have years of experience and wisdom, but also a living faith in Jesus. The world will always have its ideas on leadership. Fades, like mermaids, will come and go. But what of Jesus and His followers? Come here often throughout the year and you will find encouraging and thoughtful posts about leaders who serve the Jesus way.
May Jesus lead us in this whole new blog,
Pastor Aaron
